Giving Your AC a Mini Checkup

woman-listening

The heat isn’t going away anytime soon. That means we are still going to be focusing on keeping our air conditioners in I’m working order for a bit longer. If you got an AC tune-up in spring or early summer, chances are that your system is still working well. However, whether you got AC maintenance or not, it is good to check-in and pay attention to how your system is functioning.

Your air conditioner shouldn’t have to break down to get the expert care it needs. In some cases, you may be able to catch the signs of problems simply by paying closer attention to the way your system is behaving. On that note, we provided a small “check-up”  that you can do on your air conditioner to see if there are any signs of trouble that require the help of an HVAC contractor in Dublin.

Your Mini “AC Checkup” Checklist

Here are some questions to help guide you through giving your AC system a post-fall check-up to make sure it is still in good condition.

How regular are the AC cooling cycles?

Your air conditioner is supposed to turn on and run for a decent amount of time in order to get your indoor temperature to where it needs to be. If you start noticing that your air conditioner is producing shortened cycles or seems to run nonstop, then it is time to have it checked out by a professional. Irregular cooling cycles like this are caused by problems within the system.

How strong is your airflow?

The next time your air conditioner turns on, make sure to take a moment to check the airflow from the different vents in your home. if you notice one or more of them is producing weaker airflow than usual—or no airflow at all—reach out to a professional technician to investigate. Weak airflow can be a sign of a problem in the ductwork.

How is your thermostat’s response?

Your thermostat is supposed to respond promptly when you turn it on. A delayed response from your thermostat is a sign of trouble with this system. No response at all means the thermostat likely needs to be replaced. On a more positive note, if your thermostat needs to be replaced, this is a great chance to upgrade to a smart or Wi-Fi thermostat.

How are your energy bills?

Your energy bills can let you know if and when there is a problem with your air conditioner. The presence of large spikes in your energy bills can indicate when there is an issue within the system that requires repairs.

Make sure to occasionally check the difference between your energy bills’ monthly totals too. Steady increases in your bills can also be a sign of trouble … or of a dying AC system.

How’d your AC do over summer?

After you go through this checkup, ask yourself how your air conditioner fared. If you went through all of these questions and noticed no serious problems, then you should be good to go. However, if you’re noticing that your system is short cycling, creating large energy bills, or producing little to no airflow, call in a professional to see if it needs repairs or a replacement.
