The Problem With a Dirty Evaporator Coil

ac-tech

The evaporator coil in your heat pump or even your central air conditioner is responsible for transferring heat. In your heat pump, this can mean that it moves heat out of your home or into your home depending on what mode it is in. Of course for a central AC, the evaporator coils are responsible simply for pulling heat out of the home.

This part of your HVAC system is vital. That is why when it becomes dirty or even starts to malfunction it is a big problem. Let us explain the problems that can arise when you have a dirty evaporator coil and how we can help.

What Does the Evaporator Coil Do?

As we touched on briefly, the evaporator coil is going to be vital to the transfer of heat from your home. When your system is cooling, the refrigerant in the coil is evaporated, allowing it to absorb heat from the air in the house. That heat is then transported outside and released thanks to the condenser coil.

The Issue With a Dirty Coil

It may not seem like a little bit of dirt and debris can make much of a problem for a powerful air conditioner. However, if left unaddressed for too long the buildup of debris can in fact place extra strain on your AC, especially if it starts to coat the evaporator coil. Here are some of the negative side effects of allowing your evaporator coil to get too dirty:

  • Reduces cooling power: A dirty evaporator coil is going to have a harder time absorbing heat. This is going to mean that it takes longer to get the comfort level that you were looking for, which will end up costing you and your system.
  • Messes with IAQ: A dirty evaporator coil is going to affect your indoor air quality over time. That collection of dust can find its way into the flow of air entering your home.
  • Increases the chance of repairs: Too much debris on your evaporator coil will strain your air conditioner. The more strain the system feels, the more likely it will be that it needs repairs.

When you have a dirty evaporator coil in your air conditioner, it will lead to problems. Thankfully, it is a preventable problem.
