The “V” in HVAC: Ventilation and Why It Matters

When it comes to the efficiency of HVAC systems, there’s a component that’s not discussed nearly as often. Sure, you can buy a super-efficient central AC or heat pump, but if the ductwork in your home is in poor shape, you’re paying a lot for a system that doesn’t have a good support system to go along with it.

That’s why it’s so important to think about the “V” in HVAC, which stands for ventilation. Your ventilation (or ductwork) is how your central AC or heat pump delivers cold air to your home. And when your ductwork is old, damaged, or improperly installed, it can cause a lot of issues when it comes to your home comfort. Let’s look at why the “V” in HVAC is so important.

Common Problems With Ductwork

Ductwork that wasn’t properly sized for the home in which it’s installed will inevitably cause a lot of problems. If your home’s air ducts weren’t properly matched to the HVAC system, you’ll notice you have an inefficient system. You may pay more than you should for utilities but it feels like your home isn’t being properly cooled down

Your AC may be noisy due to the restriction or blockage of airflow. Too many homeowners assume that’s how an AC is supposed to sound. When your ductwork is too large, or if it has incurred damage or wear and tear, the result is uneven temperatures throughout the rooms of your home. It’s been shown that improper duct layout and installation can account for as much as a 60% loss in cooling efficiency!

How Poor Ductwork Costs You in the Long Run

If your ductwork wasn’t installed properly or if it’s old and in poor condition, this puts a lot of wear and tear on your HVAC system. Because conditioned air is being lost along the way, it’ll take longer for the system to get your home to the desired temperature on the thermostat. That increased usage will unfortunately result in increased utility costs.

As a result, your HVAC system will start aging rapidly and degrading faster than normal—leading to repair needs for components such as motors, fan belts, and compressors. You could even find yourself facing a premature HVAC system replacement.

It doesn’t take a lot for your ductwork to incur damage that’s so bad it needs duct repair. Construction work or remodeling that’s been done in the area of your ducts, and even intense summer temperatures in the attic if your ducts aren’t properly insulated, can result in damaged ductwork.

Pest, rodent, and even small animal infestations are also a common problem. Critters love nesting in the warm, covered spaces that ductwork provides them.

The Bottom Line

Given how much you use your air conditioner throughout the year to keep your home cool and humidity manageable—not to mention how much you spend on utilities—it’s natural to want as much conditioned air as possible reaching the rooms of your home. After all, that conditioned air costs a lot!
