5 Silent Signs That Your Furnace Needs Repair

cute dog under the warm grey blanket

Now that we’re halfway through the heating season, we’ve reached the critical time of year when your furnace’s performance may start to suffer. Sometimes your furnace will alert you to the fact that it’s struggling by making unusual noises such as screeching, banging, and booming.

Although these noises can be startling, at least your furnace is giving you a distinct message that it needs help. Unfortunately, sometimes the signs are much more subtle. Here are 5 silent signs that you need heating repair in Warner Robins, GA. When you know these signs, you can schedule repair sooner and hopefully avoid a major issue.

1. Burner Flame Color

Do you own a gas furnace? If you do, checking the burner flame color is something that you should do on a regular basis. Make it a point to check this every time you change the air filter. through a peephole, you should be able to see the burner flames. They should be bright blue in color and steady in appearance.

If the flames are wavering, or if they’re yellow, orange, or red, this is a bad sign. It means that something is interfering with the combustion process. Not only is it a potential safety hazard to let this continue unchecked, but it will also drive up your utility bills.

2. Unusual Smells

Sudden and unusual smells are a definite cause for concern. If you have a gas furnace and smell sulfur or rotten eggs, this is a sign of a gas leak. Turn the furnace off and call for immediate help.

3. Cold Spots

Are you aware of cold spots throughout your home? Perhaps you know which areas to avoid and consider this one of the “quirky characteristics” of your house. However, if your furnace was properly sized, it should be able to heat all the areas of your home. Don’t suffer through cold spots any longer. Give us a call to have this checked out.

4. Increased Utility Bills

This one isn’t so silent if your utility bills have gone up so much that it causes you to emit a choice phrase or two! When your utility bill skyrockets and can’t be linked to usage, this is a definite sign that your furnace’s performance is lackluster.

If you’ve had furnace maintenance every year, there’s no reason why you should put up with underwhelming heating. Give us a call so that we can determine what’s caused this increase. This visit might pay for itself if the result is your utility bills going back to normal levels.

5. Lukewarm Air/Decreased Airflow

These are sneaky culprits when it comes to decreased furnace performance. Your furnace should emit hot air, and the airflow should be strong and steady. If it’s not, try changing the air filter. But if you’re good about changing the filter and still experiencing these issues, it’s time to have it checked out.
